It’s that time of the year when are minds turn to the highlights of the last 12 months. Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to put together a series of Top Tens for you guys, highlighting things that have excited and inspired me throughout 2016, starting with Fugi.me’s Songs Of The Year 2016…
Lazarus - David Bowie
Haunting and distressing, a song which perfectly sums up the thoughts of a man aware of his imminent demise. A monumental loss to the music world celebrated and punctuated with this jazz fused alternative ballad.
In Common (Xpect Remix) - Alicia Keys
Alicia is back, possibly her most career defining track in 10 years. Soulful and uplifting, this Xpect remix takes the production and programming to the next level. Heavily inspired by Jamie XX with an array of overlaid minimalist percussion sounds.
Crazy Dream - Tom Misch feat. Loyle Carner
So laid back it’s nearly asleep, this fantastic guitar tinged groove was on permanent repeat after hours at fugi HQ. Featuring this years rising star of British Hip-Hop Loyle Carner.
My Hood - Ray Blk feat. Stormzy
Following perfectly from number 7’s Crazy Dream, Ray Blk could not sound sweeter on this tribute to South East London. Only made better with a fantastic interlude by Stormzy. This song makes me miss London more than ever.
Freedom - Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar
Like a roller coaster Queen Bee keeps hitting us with anthem after anthem. This rousing funk monster reminds us just how powerful a woman in love can be. And who better to accompany her than Kendrick Lamar.
30 Hours - Kanye West
A fantastic driving groove, one of the hidden gems from Life Of Pablo. No better soundtrack to a late night drive home. (unfortunately only the instrumental appears on youtube, so you’ll have to look this one up yourself)
The Curse - Magic Sword
If you haven’t heard of Magic Sword its about time you learned the ways of Synth Wave and took some time to check them out. Sounding like a cross between Paul Van Dyk, Vangelis & Daft Punk, everything they make sounds like the soundtrack to the best Sci-Fi movie never made.
Gotta Lotta - 2 Chainz feat. Lil' Wayne
A future strip club anthem, who knew a song containing interpolations from “Scatman (Ski Ba Bop Ba Dop Bop)”, could sound so sexy. Featuring everyones favourite rapper Lil’ Wayne, the duo sound great together. Get ready and iron those dollar bills….
Dark Necessities - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
The boys are back, and sounding funkier than they always did. This almost disco tale of addiction, cuddles your ear drums, makes your booty wiggle and implants some serious ear worms in your mind.
This Is England - Kano
At number 1 another England centric UK Hip-Hop Anthem (I’m noticing a theme here). However none sound quite as important as this monstrous orchestral stomper. Kano shows us he still has it by the bucket load and makes us all proud to be from England!
Well thats my Songs Of The Year 2016, I’d love to hear your thoughts? Why not put together your own top 10 and share it here?…
